Adhesive raw materials for automotive applications

Technical lamination for interior trim can play an important role in reducing the carbon emissions generated during vehicle manufacturing – and fundamentally change the way we design, build, use and recycle vehicles. Smart surfaces for smart mobility.

Hiding displays, offering haptic feedback or reducing the time drivers have to look away from the road – interior trim and automotive interior design are keystones in the development of modern mobility solutions.

But in the 21st century we are striving for a better mobility that takes us places – without taking away our place to live. With this paradigm shift come several challenges, like reducing weight to reduce emissions or energy-efficient production processes.

Modern mobility, modern materials

Treated surface materials play a key role in the development and production of these modern vehicle interiors. The automotive industry and its suppliers employ a large number of different technologies in this production process.

The most flexible and also most sophisticated procedure is thermolamination. Carrier materials made of linked natural fiber material or plastic (like ABS) are refined with the help of thermoplastic films in the form of PVC, TPO or other textile materials.

This lamination process calls for reliable, resilient automotive adhesives to be utilized in the manufacturing and trimming of door trims, dashboards, a/b/c columns, parcel shelves or car consoles.

Raw materials for automotive adhesives used in vacuum-thermoforming exhibit the following properties:

  • activation temperature between 50-65°C
  • high “green strength”
  • high heat resistance (>120°C)
  • good freeze-thaw resistance
  • good plasticizer resistance

Our portfolio for interiors that last

Thermoplastic polyurethane dispersions (PUD) for automotive interiors

In combination with our additives, our adhesive raw materials can be formulated to produce two-component adhesives or latent-reactive systems. They can be used to develop odor-free, block-resistant adhesives that can cope with extreme climatic changes and are very fast-setting. Our laboratory has the required test and lamination methods (e.g. a vacuum-frame table) that enable us to simulate all relevant customer processes.
