Collaborative success stories: BASF partnerships with SPP, Quimovil and Silbo

BASF is working in cooperation with partners throughout the packaging value chain to help improve the sustainability of various products throughout their life cycle. At Interpack 2023, the Resins team presented fully water-based printed and converted paper and flexible packaging among other exhibits. These progressive solutions allow customers to achieve lower carbon emissions, reduce plastic waste and increase the share of renewables in their products.

Paper-based packaging from SPP

Sustainable Packaging Products (SPP) showcased paper-based packaging solutions created using a combination of selected paper materials and Joncryl® HPB technology. Collaboration with BASF has enabled SPP to develop various sustainable paper packaging solutions, including fast-food containers, ovenable food trays, and paper-based pouches for dry food applications.

SPP is a leader in the development and supply of sustainable paper packaging materials that are responsibly sourced and conventionally repulpable. BASF’s Joncryl® HPB technology provides water-based polymers for use in coatings for functionalized paper(board) packaging applications.

Sustainable flexible packaging from Quimovil

Together, BASF and Quimovil developed a sustainable flexible packaging solution by pooling the expertise of various partners along the value chain. At Interpack 2023, the team proudly presented pet-food packaging consisting of mono-material film printed with water-based lamination inks based on Joncryl® FLX resins. The advantage of mono-material packaging is ease of recyclability. Additionally, water-based inks generate few, if any, VOCs and leave a reduced product carbon footprint. Quimovil is a member of the PRETHINK INK collaborative network for water-based technology set up by BASF and its industry partners (see: PRETHINK INK).

Paper-based and flexible food packaging from Silbo
Cooperation partner Silbo develops paper-based and flexible food packaging solutions using water-based ink technology.  Silbo was the first company in Europe to introduce water-based printing on flexible packaging materials. The company belongs to the international network PRETHINK INK (see: PRETHINK INK).  At Interpack 2023, the Resins team showcased packaging printed with water-based inks and/or laminated with water-based adhesives from Silbo. The flexible packaging exhibited was partly based on recycled plastic ‒ a further contribution toward sustainability.

The power of collaboration for sustainable innovation

Partnerships with companies such as SPP, Quimovil and Silbo, driven by the integration of BASF products and technologies, demonstrate the potential for sustainable innovation in the packaging industry. Working together is clearly the key to overcoming challenges and achieving a more sustainable future for the sector.
